Salem witch trials
The Salem Witch Trials, began in 1692 (also known as the Salem witch hunt and the Salem Witchcraft Episode), resulted in a number of convictions and executions for witchcraft in both Salem Village and Salem Town, Massachusetts. Some have argued that it was the result of a period of factional infighting and Puritan witch hysteria which led to the executions of 20 people (14 women, 6 men) and the imprisonment of between 175 and 200 people. In addition to those executed at least five people died in prison with one being pressed to death by rocks.
Anyone watch Eastwick?
What did you think of it? It seems to me like the dark haired one in glasses could do a lot better than the kinda dufus photographer. I guess we are supposed to know that the new rich guy in town is evil and is casting an evil influence on the three female stars. The preview implied that he had been there before a very long time before, probably at the time of THE WITCH trials.
my last discussion for the night
lets say the world would end today, nothing drastic, no meteor nothing like that, lets just say a virus was released unto us by some sort of terrorist or something and mankind just ceased to exist and lets say aliens come to our planet looking for alternate life forms and finds our history books and learns how to tap into our internet and looks through all of that, would you be embarressed about our species? the aliens look through our history book and reads about the salem witch trials, the halocaust, the spanish inquisition, the war in iraq, the la riots, 911, slavery, the civil war, the revolutionary war, the colloseums, the bombing of hiroshima. and all of the other acts of extreme violence that humanity has taken part in. would you be ashamed that the aliens would find us to just be some barbaric war crazed race?just something I was pondering, cant wait to see the responses in the morning
Salem, Massachuettus
Forgive me if I mispelled anything. Has anyone ever been to Salem and the site of the salem witch trials. I went last fall and found it really fascinating and full of history. Any great stories?
I'm having trouble reconciling Christian ideology and the acts of Christians
Lately I've been reading a lot of posts about religion and was involved in a particularly nasty discussion concerning gay marriage. And it's stirred up a lot of feelings inside me that I don't know what to do with. I was raised in a Christian household. We went to church every Sunday when we were kids. I wasn't baptized, but I was dedicated to the church in a small ceremony. I went to Sunday school. But over the years as I grew older, things started to make less and less sense to me. I would go to Church on Sunday and everyone would be all pleasant while in the church, but on Monday those same people would stab you in the back. And I started reading about what religion has done to people over the last several centuries and it became difficult to reconcile ideology with action. In my childhood, I was taught that Jesus was love, God was love. "Jesus loves me because the bible tells me so." But historically, and currently, Christianity isn't about love. The Crusades, the Inquisition, the executions for heresy, or in Galileo's instance, house arrest for the rest of his life because he believed the earth revolved around the sun and not the other way around, the corruption, the...
Around one quater of witches were men?
The word witch has become synonmous with women accused of working magic, and the consensus tell us that the witch trials in Europe and colonial america were simply a war against women. Although women were the overallmojority of victims, the burning times were pretty rough for men, too.
Outline Ch.4 Hoffman's "The Twenties"
"The Twenties" by Frederick HoffmanHoffman Ch.4 “Forms of Traditionalism”I. Using the American Past: “New England served, more often than not, as the scapegoat of their abuse when American critics of the 1920’s attended at all to the past: Puritanism and the transcendentalists, and frequently Emerson.” (Hoffman 144). a. John Dewey wrote about the future as a time “when the consciousness of science if fully impregnated with the consciousness of human value. There was more than a hint of utopianism in this; the actual present, usable past, and the definable future were combined to produce a liberal metaphor of linear progress ” (Hoffman 145) Science is viewed as a powerful force that will revolutionize society, and science is always seen as progressive. b. “Many critics sought to redress a historical balance, to break the barrier of chronology and to use criteria of ‘neglected greatness,’ ‘genuine value as opposed to historical place,’ and ‘usefulness for our own time’”. World War I at least temporarily put the younger writers on their guard with respect to superficial readings of the American tradition. The realist and naturalist development, which antedated the war by...
The God Obsession.
The God Obsession occurs when a person's thoughts about God slip beyond the border of healthy belief or disbelief and cross into an area that comes close to or becomes a psychosis. It is normal to wonder about the nature of God and to look for answers. It becomes abnormal when this starts to dominate your everyday life.It does not matter what belief you chose to embrace be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist, when your day-to-day life loses its focus, and your every concern becomes how what you do affects your relationship with God and your chances for an afterlife, you are evidencing characteristics of the God Obsession. When most of your thoughts revolve around God and you lose touch with friends and family, or even worse, alienate them by insisting that they conform to your beliefs you are in trouble.Objectively we must realize that there may or may not be an afterlife. It is foolish to squander the one life that are sure you have in an attempt to make an afterlife better. If you do your best to enjoy this life and to ensure that others enjoy life also you are doing what it takes. Heaven, hell or reincarnation are all speculation. We have no idea what...
Do you hate to tell people what you do for a living?
I am a professional psychic. Have been one since I was a kid, and now do it full time. Being a descendant of someone who was hanged during the witch trials of Salem MA in the year 1694, I get a lot of odd questions.I really hate telling people in the real world what I do for a living because of the reactions I get. Reaction one is usually negative and derogatory where some snide remark is made about taking people's money. Reaction two is the exact opposite and people expect me to read them onthe spot. Which I can do if I don't plan on keeping my friends, for this always ends in me being the center of attention.I'm usually on target with my predictions thus my reputation is good. But that does not stop me from pausing before saying "I'm a spiritual Advisor." Sometimes I feel so self consious about it that I simply say "I'm a counselor". That of course has its own set of drawbacks. What would you do? What do you do when that happens? I really want to know
ignorance of Pagan history, from Pagans themselves.
another Witchy Whinge from me.how much rubbish do you see Pagans spouting as truth.time and time again I see claims that Wicca is one of the oldest religions there is, even though it's less than 100 years old.it was founded by Gerald Brosseau Gardner (1884-1964) and has probably only been around since the 1940s, and came to wider public attention following the repeal of the Witchraft act in 1951.it's an initiatory Tradition, requiring it's followers to have been initiated into a coven that can trace its lineage back to Gardners Coven. the exception to this being Alexandrian Wicca, which is a variation on Gardnerian, so lineage will be back to Alex Sanders Coven.if you have beleifs that fit with either Gardnerian or Alexandrian Wicca, but are not initiated, then you are not a Wiccan, but a Pagan. it could be considered outright disrespectful to use a title you haven't earned. nothing wrong with not being Wiccan. just seems to be a bit rude to take that title without that initiation.another very common one is that Witches were burned in large numbers during the Witch trials, and that the victims of this were happy clappy card carrying Pagan Witches.first...
